Family Mediation

ARC Psychological and Counseling Services provide opportunities for parents to resolve issues surrounding divorce proceedings in child custody and conflict management. Research indicates that divorce is associated with an increased risk for a wide range of child mental, substance abuse and social adaptation problems. A positive post divorce relationship with their parents is seen as a source of protection to lower these risks for children and youth. ARC Psychological and Counseling Services provides the services of a certified Family Mediator and Parent Coordinator with an extensive background in child development and mental health who is able to include the child in family law matters related to them. Through intervention of this kind, developmental recovery from high conflict separation is promoted by enhancing the emotional availability of parents to their children. In conflict situations, a neutral person considers the best interests of the child in an atmosphere of confidentiality and co-operation between parties with the understanding that parties involved in custody proceedings will have a shared future together long after litigation ends. The focus of mediation is for parents to work together as child-rearing partners minimizing any adverse effects on the child. In the capacity of a Parent Coordinator, the mental health professional is able to make decisions when given authority by the courts that directly impact the child such as issues surrounding the nature and management of living arrangements within the post-divorce family.

GOOD MENTAL HEALTH
Mental Health is a vital aspect to each person's quality of life. It encompasses the needs of all persons including all age groups. We are all potential users of mental health services whether in the form of a family doctor, a counselor/psychologist, a support group or a psychiatrist. It is important to monitor the state of mental health of ourselves and those we care about. In this way we are able to provide encouragement and support to seek outside help before we are forced to cope with a crisis situation which may drain our resources and energy. Mental health affects every aspect of our lives. We are in today's world constantly balancing the demands of work, family and financial obligations. When excessive anxiety because of these demands creates conflict and physical symptoms, we need to take notice and take measures to address our problems before they become unbearable and appear unsolvable. Many situations do have a solution when we work through a process that helps us see realistic alternatives and are willing to use the resources to help us through it.
